Geographic origin matters in wine labeling, and in South Africa there is a regulatory system called Wine of Origin that uses Geographical Units to group grape-growing areas. The largest level comprises five broad geographical units, covering the country’s main wine-growing zones. Because this structure is specific to South Africa, those five large Geographical Units are located there. Other countries have different origin schemes and don’t use this exact five-unit top level.
